Biographical note

Matthew Jones gained his PhD in molecular biology and undertook postdoctoral work in this field. When sequencing team leader positions were advertised at the Sanger Centre in 1993, now the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Jones applied for one of these roles. Although Jones did not get the advertised role, he was instead offered the role of assisting John Sulston with subcloning work, which involved preparing fragments of DNA for sequencing by splitting them into small segments and packaging them into pieces of bacterial DNA.

Matthew Jones was interviewed about his subcloning work for the public engagement website Your Genome.
