Biographical note

The role of the Information Department was to provide accurate unbiased information on all aspects of family planning, sexual, emotional and reproductive health, including service provision, by means of a nationwide information, research and consultancy service.

Their objectives included:

  • promoting and increasing awareness of family planning and sexual health issues
  • improving information about family planning by cooperating with professionals, organisations and manufacturers in the field
  • acting as quality control on the information content of relevant FPA activities (publishing, media responses etc.)
  • This section is also concerned with the government supported Family Planning Information Service (FPIS), a joint venture set up in 1977 between the FPA and the HEC. The FPIS was set up to provide all forms of information material and publicity services to professionals and the public concerning the availability of family planning and the existence of free services. The FPIS consisted of: the Central Inquiries Department (CID), which dealt with detailed requests and inquiries, the Information Bureau which dealt with walk-in requests and the Library and Information Centre, consisting of reference books, journals and files covering all aspects of fertility and population.
