Description

Scrapbook kept by Collins. Originally a ledger containing notes on patients and on medicines prescribed them, dating from the 1860s, most of its pages have been covered by newspaper clippings dating from the 1870s. Many of the cuttings relate to public health issues such as smallpox vaccination, the quality of the water in the Regent's Canal, London, and the diphtheria epidemic in Germany in 1878; many others relate to hunting.

ff. 130v-159v: cuttings on medical and public health issues, vaccination predominating from f.147a onwards. Several pamphlets and leaflets are laid in between the original pages and are numbered f.142a (from Chambers' Journal), f. 147a (from The Medium and Daybreak, spiritualist journal), f.149a (handbill), f.155a (reprint from The Herald of Health) and f.156a (reprint from the Hastings and St. Leonards News).

ff.176v-200v: cuttings on vaccination. Several pamphlets and leaflets are laid in between the original pages and are numbered 180a (from the Society for Suppressing Compulsory Vaccination), 197a ("Anti-Vaccination: its philosophy" by John Fraser), 198a ("Compulsory Vaccination opposed to Science and Freedom", by F.W. Newman), 199a ("Voices on Vaccination from Cornwall and Derbyshire") and 200a (petition in Parliament, 1867).

ff.201r-220r: original manuscript pages, giving notes on patients, with inset leaflets on vaccination (f.201a, from the Brighton Daily News) and smallpox in Bristol (f.202a).
