Description

"Madam Bridget Hyde her receipt book August the 19th Anno Domini 1676."

The first part is mainly concerned with cookery receipts, in the second there are many medical receipts, household remedies, cordial waters, etc.

Inside the upper cover 'Book V.' At the end of the text 'December ye 3rd 1690'.

The volume contains pressed ivy leaves and [unidentified] flowers.

1 volume 2 ll. (first bl.). + 82 pp. + 2 ll. + 160 pp. + 7 ll. folio. 40 × 24 cm. Original calf gilt binding, worn. Sides stamped with arms of Hyde in gold.

Purchased at Sotheby's 2/6/1930, Lot 162.

Biographical note

The compiler was the daughter of Sir Thomas Hyde, who in 1682 married Peregrine Osborne, 2nd Duke of Leeds [1658-1729].
