Description

Collection of medical, veterinary and household recipes in a single hand, late 18th-early 19th century (paper watermarked 1794). Various authorities are named, including Lady E Hatton (ff.6, 15, 55v.), Dr Wilmot (ff. 18, 56), Dr Kelson (f. 20v), Dr Thornton (f. 25), Dr Whitton or Whitter (ff. 27v., 53), Sir William Knighton [1776-1836, physician to the Prince Regent] (f. 31v.), Dr Babbington [presumably William Babington MD, 1756-1833] (f. 32v.), Lady Heron (f. 45v.), Dr Birdwood (f. 48v.), and Dr Mayo (f. 59). There is also a prescription for cholera dated July 1832, from Mr Earle, surgeon (f. 63v.), and a remedy for `the epidemic amongst cattle 1840' (f. 69v.).

73 ff. original pagination 1-125 and unnumbered. 1 volume: 198 x 155 mm. Original, marbled-paper covered boards, rebacked in calf. Front board inscribed `Book of Recipes', with an indecipherable set of initials beneath.
