The following is an interim description that may change once detailed cataloguing takes place. This set of papers includes a signed copy of The Nation's Health, a selection of handwritten notes and typed notes written by Alwyn Smith, photographs of colleagues, Dr Smith's PhD, and certificates.

Biographical note

Alwyn Smith (d.2016) was a doctor and an academic whose influence extended across public health policy and practice. He was able to contribute to a number of public health issues including but not limited to screening or Down's Syndrome, breast and cervical cancer. In 1981 he was elected president of the Faculty of Public Health and in 1984 became the only president to be elected twice. He was the author of 'The Nation's Health' (1988) which launched to immediate political and public debate. The health white paper released by the UK government in 1992 was modelled on the approach detailed in The Nation's Health.
