A large collection reflecting Tizard's work in paediatrics and neurology as a clinician, involvement with numerous medical societies and associations and charitable organisations in the UK and internationally, and administrative activities on local health authority committees. Includes research material, case files and items relating to legal cases and there may be Data Protection issues. Also correspondence, lectures, reprints, and files on particular conditions

Acquisition note

The material was received from Sir Peter Tizard in two accessions: Acc 176 was transferred from Sir Peter's office in the John Radcliffe Hospital in September 1984, and an additional accrual of material from his filing cabinets at the Churchill Hospital, Acc 280, took place in December 1987

Biographical note

Sir Peter Tizard, son of the eminent scientist Sir Henry Tizard FRS, was educated at Rugby, Oriel College Oxford and the Middlesex Hospital Medical School. He qualified in medicine in 1941. After war service in the RAMC he held posts at the Hospital for Sick Children Great Ormond St and St Mary's Hospital and was appointed consultant at Paddington Green Children's Hospital in 1949. In 1954 he was appointed Reader in Child Health at Hammersmith Hospital; in 1964 he was appointed to a personal chair in paediatrics of London University. In 1972 he accepted the newly created Chair of Paediatrics at Oxford. In 1972 he published (as joint author) Medical Care of Newborn Babies. He was knighted in 1982. He was an active participant in many organisations and president of the British Paediatric Association 1982-1985.
