Ordering Instructions This archive record describes a grouping of orderable items: to order any of them for consultation, order copies or view them if they have been digitised, navigate down the archive hierarchy to Item level.
Description The Lewis Group who owned department stores across the country, mainly in the North, approached the Tavistock Institute to assist in research to elucidate trends in department store usage and to assess the Lewis Group image, particularly in the south of the country where they had less of a presence. The research was primarily conducted through discussion groups and intensive individual interviews, both with groups from the north of the country and the south. The discussion groups consisted of men and women of all ages from a range of social classes, from working class to upper middle-class. Some of the participants were drawn specifically from interested organisations and associations. Later phases of the project also proposed studies of developing stores to meet specific local needs and the organisation of departments with a view to developing staff training. Little material exists for the latter phases of the project.
