About this work

Description

An organisational consultancy project undertaken by the Tavistock Institute to identify factors within the diocese requiring change in order to design and implement a 'rational' organisational model for the Centre for Research and Training, particularly in reaction to changing dependencies on the Church and the needs of the diverse surrounding communities. The primary method of research was through interviews with members with managment fucntions. Original consultations were carried out in the late 1960s by A.K. Rice, during which period the Centre for Research and Training was established. Later consultancy work involved other representatives of the Tavistock Institute, primarily Eric Miller.

In May 1978, Chelmsford Cathedral Centre for Research and Training was engaged to carry out a consultancy on the Cathedral, under the leadership of Eric Miller, to report on the present activities of the Cathedral in the light of A.K. Rice's previous work. The consultancy work under Eric Miller included an examination of the role of the Church in society, an examination of the tasks of the Cathedral, staff responsibilities, the development of a working group, and the relationship between the Cathedral and the Diocese and the implications of this for parishioners.
