Geriatric Hospital Care Project

Originating from a request by the Department of Health and Social Security, the project was undertaken by Eric Miller and Geraldine Gywnne on behalf of the Tavistock Institute as an action research project to collaborate with geriatric hospitals to facilitate further understanding of problems arising from the care of the elderly, including the effects of the stresses of the task on nurses and the nurse-patient relationship. The research for the project involved a case study of a hospital moving away from the concept of custodial care and pioneering attempts at re-integration of patients within society. The project was envisioned in two phases: Firstly, research within Cowley Road Hospital, Oxford to build organisational models to fit the hospital's task, and the selection of a model to experiment with, and secondly, validation of the models in other hospitals and the dissemination of training and participation in the models.
