About this work

Description

The material in this collection reflects Lewis's career in tropical medicine with a particular interest in the eradication of trypanosomiasis. In general it comprises files of background information - reports, articles and so forth - rather than Lewis's own administrative documentation. The focus is upon East Africa: Kenya, Tanganyika (now part of Tanzania) and Mozambique all feature.

Arrangement

The papers in this collection have been left in the same files into which they were grouped on arrival at the Wellcome Library. It is not, however, immediately clear why some papers have been put into one file and some allied ones into another; not is it possible to give the collection any more detailed structure than a simple arrangement into chronological order.

Biographical note

Edward Aneurin Lewis FRES (fl. 1930-1954) worked in the Department of Veterinary Sciences in Kenya in the 1930s and 1940s, eventually rising to become Chief Field Zoologist. HIs work centered on the eradication of trypanosomiasis; it was, therefore, a logical move for him to join the East African Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Research and Reclamation Organisation in 1949 as Deputy Director. He served in this capacity until 1952, when he was promoted to Director, serving as such until his retirement in 1954.
